Ne esistono di due tipi: pre-consumer e post-consumer. Nel primo si utilizzano rimanenze o scarti di tessuto, nel secondo si modificano capi già usati, che vengono sezionati, decostruiti, modificati, riassemblati per crearne di nuovi.
Upcycling sembra essere la nuova parola chiave per limitare l’impatto ambientale dell’industria moda, in cui diventa sempre più necessario sviluppare la circolarità del sistema.
Il concetto di upcycling ha una tradizione antica. Martin Margiela se ne era fatto portavoce negli anni ’90, adesso si è fatto strada non solo tra i designer emergenti, ma anche tra i brand di lusso. I capi realizzati sono unici, irripetibili, come pezzi da collezione.
