Il film “Orlando” di Sally Potter del 1992, tratto dal romanzo di Virginia Woolf del 1928, è un'ipnotica esplorazione dell'identità, del genere e della moda che attraversa quattro secoli. Il film si apre nell'Inghilterra del XVI secolo, dove ci viene presentato il giovane e aristocratico Orlando (Tilda Swinton). La regina Elisabetta I prende in simpatia Orlando e gli concede il dono dell'immortalità, dicendogli che “non potrà mai invecchiare o morire”.

Nel corso dei secoli, Orlando subisce una serie di trasformazioni. Nel XVII secolo, Orlando cambia bruscamente sesso e diventa una donna. Come donna, naviga nel mutevole paesaggio sociale, sperimentando sia il privilegio che la sottomissione.

Nel XVIII secolo si reca a Costantinopoli, dove trascorre diversi decenni.

Nel XIX secolo, Orlando torna in Inghilterra e si stabilisce in una casa signorile, dove continua a muoversi nel tempo, sperimentando i rapidi cambiamenti dell'epoca vittoriana e l'alba dell'età moderna.

Nel XX secolo, Orlando è stata testimone di secoli di storia umana. Il film culmina con il risveglio della ragazza nel presente, che ha conservato la sua bellezza giovanile e la sua sensibilità androgina nonostante il passare del tempo.

Critica

La narrazione visiva del film, in particolare attraverso l'abbigliamento, fornisce un ricco arazzo di storia della moda che riflette il cambiamento delle norme sociali e dell'identità personale.

In questo modo, la regista sovverte le nozioni tradizionali di genere, presentando un protagonista che sfida i rigidi binari che da tempo regolano le norme sociali. L'identità fluida di Orlando diventa una metafora della natura mutevole dell'esperienza umana, sfidando gli spettatori a riconsiderare la costruzione del sé.

Al di là della narrazione, “Orlando” è una splendida opera d'arte cinematografica, con la regia di Sally Potter che eleva il materiale in un regno di poetica, onirica grandezza. Il linguaggio visivo del film, infarcito di suggestivi tableaux e di giochi surreali, trasforma lo schermo in una tela per l'esplorazione di ciò che è senza tempo e di ciò che è attuale.
